This years NAB gave M8media the opportunity to research available high definition video measurement equipment to compliment our grading suite. Software video measuring systems were of particular interest to us, because they are easily adaptable and upgradeable. However, none of the systems we looked at fulfil all our requirements yet. The manufacturers were, however, very keen on our input and we hope to see major developments at IBC.

Our second objective was the search for a small production switcher for our studio. We looked at several different systems and found some very interesting products. However, only one system offers true high definition switching for an affordable price.

We also had the opportunity to see new versions and developments for equipment already in use at M8media. Particularly interesting was the new version of Film Master, which offers several very useful features. Furthermore, Film Master and Avid are working together on the completion of an integrated workflow between the two systems, making the interchange of material much easier. Avid also presented its asset management solution “Interplay”. At the moment it is geared more towards very big broadcasting houses, nevertheless asset management is a feature that M8media will surely be looking at in the future.

Another important aim of our visit was the research of the latest trends in the high definition DVD and online video market. To this end, we visited the stalls of major DVD authoring software producers and suppliers of online video services.

In summary, NAB has given M8media the opportunity to discuss and consider new technology keeping them at the forefront of postproduction in Scotland.
